Eyes on the Prize

Dun Aengus on the Aran Island of Inish-More off the west coast

I was lucky enough to do a bunch of travelling when I was younger. Once we had kids, the travelling was restricted to the Halifax-Montreal-New York loop and the in-laws. As the kids got older, the Gonzos started doing all sorts of hiking and paddling trips and I saw a lot of Quebec, Maine and New Hampshire.

Now the kids have moved out, the tax rebates have gotten bigger, the basement apartment is rented out, the health is still OK and the feet have gotten itchy.

I am off to Ireland in late April.

The basic idea is to carry a small pack (15-18 lbs) with a light sleeping bag, rain gear and a change of clothes. I'll be staying in hostels all the way. I plan to do a lot of walking, including a 80+ km walk out of Dublin in the Wicklow Mountains and a big chunk of the Ring Of Kerry. As well, I expect to get out to the Aran Islands, then hopefully up to Belfast. I fly in and out of London

I will be arriving in Dublin by ferry on Saturday, April 28, spending the day touring about, hopefully with a trip to the Guinness Brewery. Sunday afternoon is a trip to the zoo, one of the oldest in Europe. Sunday evening, I have tickets to the Dublin Opera (Rossini's Cinderella) which is a 52nd birthday present from my Mom.

Glad that you're going through with it!
You probably already have, but I strongly urge you to pick up a bottle of Campsuds (from TAO or MEC, etc) and to bring a couple of clothes pins and six feet of rope to hang up your laundry. There's nothing worse than sitting in a laundromat when you could be out enjoying your trip!

Hi Bruce,
Great adventures planned, life is a journey that you've been on for a LONG time...after all you've done for us Gonzos, you deserve the great opportunity to start wandering and explore more of the world!

if you meet anyone shorter than you, wearing a green cap and pointed boots....mug him and you'll not be needin' the gaelic jabber to get a beer every day. and if you find any murphys that belong to us, don't bring them home. they're all moochers and the cider won't last.

fare thee well big brother (do bring back a pebble for me would ya)

Yo Brucie:
-Nancy and I are heading out tomorrow, and will be reading your blog-hopefully daily after your departure. Be sure to input your pre-trip musings.

-Remember, on your journey, once you sit down there are demerit points for every time you have to go get something--pack well.

The Aran Islands are spectacular - but don't forget to hang off the edge of Dun Aengus (if they still allow you to get that close to the edge) on your belly w/ your hands hanging down towards the sea. What a thrill.

Hi Bruce
Have a great trip, sounds like you have things all thought out well, as is your practice. Nice picture, looks like the edge of the world.
Have fun.
